The 2010 conference will be held at the Cave City Convention Center in Cave City, Kentucky on September 17th and 18th.  The theme will be ‘Telling Our Story’.

Explore engaging and creative ways to tell the story of science, math, history, and the interaction between people and the environment at KAEE’s 34th annual conference. Effectively communicating the importance of environmental education is essential to our supervisors, legislators, and funding sources.  This issue is especially important in today’s economic climate.  Stories are the soul of our organization.  Share, listen, learn, and enjoy!

Teaching About Climate Change

Sixteen teachers from nine counties participated in an exciting professional development workshop in June entitled Teaching About Climate Change, held at McConnell Springs Nature Park in Lexington.  The workshop was a joint venture between KAEE, the KY Division for Air Quality (DAQ), and the KY Environmental Education Council (KEEC).  Facilitators Jane Eller (KEEC), Elizabeth Robb-Schmitz (DAQ), and Roberta Burnes (DAQ) presented a variety of experiential activities and tools for helping students make sense of the developing science of climate change.  Division for Air Quality Director John Lyons and Assistant Director Sean Alteri were also in attendance and participated in the activities alongside the teachers.  By all accounts, the workshop was a resounding success.  Said one teacher, “What a fantastic workshop!  Wow!  Immediately useful activities, starter info for lessons, plenty of accessible resources.”  Another remarked that it was the best EE training she had received thus far.

If you missed the workshop, not to worry – several of the best activities will be repeated during sessions at the annual KAEE conference in September.  For more information about bringing this workshop to your area, contact Environmental Education Specialist Roberta Burnes at the Division for Air Quality’s toll-free education line: 800-928-0047.
